The 2017 Class of Kufuor Scholars, currently attending the annual Leadership Camp in the small town of Bantama in Sene West District of the Brong Ahafo Region, celebrated World Environmental Day by planting trees at the site of the African Plantations for Sustainable Development (APSD). The APSD is a Norwegian private biomass energy generation company.
The tree planting exercise that involved the Tabebuiaspecie was led by Mr. Edward Owusu, the District Chief Executive of the area who paid a visit to the scholars at the camp. Also present were Prof. Baffour Agyeman-Duah, CEO of the John A. Kufuor Foundation and Dr. Pascal Brenya, coordinator of the Scholars Program.
According to APSD Environmental Officer Samuel Okine, the exercise added to the company’s project to ultimately generate 600 megawatts of power for the national grid. Mr. Okine explained that the company hopes to plant over 75 million trees (eucalyptus) on some 25,000 hectares of land after which power generation will commence.
Further explaining the significance of the project, the APSD community liaison officer Derrick Mensah Yeboah said afforestation mitigates the effect of global warming which continues to be a global concern, by reducing the carbon monoxide content in the atmosphere.
