Yaw Oku-Ampofo Anakwah, a pioneer Kufuor Scholar and a student of the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) has won an award in the Sanitation Technology Challenge which was organized by Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources, Department of Civil Engineering, KNUST and with the support of UNICEF. The aim of the Sanitation Challenge is to stimulate innovations in the provision of appropriate, sustainable and affordable toilet facilities for rural and urban areas of Ghana.
The Sanitation Technology Challenge was open in the early part of the year and after a thorough review of the ideas presented by the applicants, Yaw Oku-Ampofo Anakwah and William Alorgbey, his team mate from the same University emerged as the first runner-up.
The award ceremony was graced by Mr. Osei Asibey Antwi, the Mayor of Kumasi; Prof. Esi Awuah, former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR); Prof Kwabena Nyarko, and several distinguished guests in the Sanitation sector. The event took place on 16 July, 2018 at Noda Hotel in Kumasi during the National Stock Taking Forum.
The Sanitation Challenge was open to toilet manufacturers, researchers, students, sanitation practitioners, innovators among others. Applicants were tasked to come out with the appropriate low-cost and safe toilet technologies for rural and peri-urban areas.
The innovation presented by Yaw Anakwah and his teammate addressed the issue of the effect of faecal waste and urine had on ground water and also introduced the concept of Green House Effect, using a glass covered faecal chamber to speed up the rate of decomposition and reduce odor.
