The maiden edition of the John Agyekum Kufuor Cup match, to celebrate the 80th birthday of the former president of Ghana has been re-launched in Accra on Thursday, November 1 2018 at the residence of the former president John Agyekum Kufuor.
The cup match would be played between two of Ghana’s football giants based in the Ashanti region ; Obuasi Ashantigold and Kumasi Asante Kotoko on Sunday, December 2nd, at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi.
This charity match is being organized by Primeval Media under the auspices of the John Agyekum Kufuor (JAK) Foundation to raise funds amounting to GH¢80 million cedis for the various developments and leadership projects under the foundation and as well commemorate the upcoming 80th birthday of the former President.
The match which was scheduled between the country’s two most glamorous clubs Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko was cancelled after the Phobians pulled out.
President Kufuor in an address at the launch said, the sport of football the world over had proven to be a major vessel in uniting people from diverse backgrounds.
Meanwhile, the funds raised from the match would be channelled to various project with five million dollars allocated to the construction of an ultra-modern Centre for Leadership and Governance at the University of Ghana.
Investment returns would be used for the running of the various projects of the Foundation, which includes, The Kufuor Scholars Programme (KSP), The Kufuor Young Entrepreneurs Network, Annual Lecture Series on Governance and Development, The Kufuor Election Observers Group, and The Kufuor Prize for Best Community Leadership.
