To the delight of well meaning Ghanaians, the John A. Kufuor Cup was launched, Monday, at the former President’s Accra residence.
The J.A. Kufuor Cup which is a charity based initiative of the John Agyekum Kufuor (JAK) Foundation will feature long time rivals Accra Hearts of Oak and Kumasi Asante Kotoko in a historical match to raise funds towards the JAK Foundation Eighty for Eighty endowment fund, on the 28th of October at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi.
The event saw in attendance football enthusiast across the city of Accra, especially fans of Kumasi Asante Kotoko and Accra Hearts of Oak, as well as supporters and well wishers of the former President and JAK Foundation. With a series of events leading up to today’s Launch, the JAK Foundation seeks to raise eighty (80) million cedis to commemorate the 80th birthday of its Chairman on the 8th of December.
It is worthy of note that under the then Kufuor administration, Ghana qualified for the world cup for the first time in 2006. The President a native of Kumasi is a not only a supporter of the game of football, but hugely concerned about fostering unity and culture through the globally loved game of soccer. Although President Kufuor served his time as Chairman of Kumasi Asante Kotoko, at the launch of the J.A Kufuor Cup, he shared that he would do his best to maintain a neutral ground.
Incidentally, it would seem Professor Baffour Agyeman-Duah, Chief Executive officer of the JAK Foudation, already predicted a win for the Kumasi stars at the end of his welcome speech, when he heartily wished the guests “a fabulous evening,” and quickly added “No pun intended” in response to a joyful uproar from excited Kotoko Fans. Ghanaian Football enthusiasts are familiar with the alias of the Kumasi club, “The Fabulous Club”. Their Accra Counterparts are affectionately called, “Phobia”.
With both sides confident that they will take home the trophy, the event powered by Primeval Media ran a smooth course, and the J. A. Kufuor Cup was launched amid cheers by John Amuah, the Managing Director of Universal Merchant Bank.
