I had the honour of speaking on behalf of the alumni of the Kufuor Scholars Program (KSP) when we paid a courtesy call on former President John A. Kufuor at his home recently. That special day, May 13, happened to be my birthday as well. It was such a great pleasure to speak about my experience as a scholar and now as an alumnus. In this article, I reproduce some of the things I said to him during the meeting.
I can’t help but reflect with excitement on how far this KSP journey has brought us. The training and mentoring we received during our mini camps and other training events positively changed our lives forever. I remember our first training event – a leadership camp at Atebubu, which was crowned with a visit to the residence of His Excellency John Kufuor. Just as he has done today, he warmly received us and encouraged us to be great transformational leaders. He also told us to be patient in all our endeavours and work hard. We definitely did not take this lightly as some of us went on to occupy top leadership positions in our various schools. We have strived to portray the extraordinary leadership skills we had acquired through our participation in the Kufuor Scholars Program in every aspect of our lives.
Through the years as Kufuor Scholars and even now as alumni of this prestigious program, we’ve had the opportunity to meet so many seasoned speakers, business owners, and major game-changers who have helped us re-adjust our mindsets to be great leaders. Participation in the program has also enabled us to form a network amongst ourselves so we all always have a colleague to lean on in times of joy and tears.
A number of my colleagues have been given the opportunity to further their education through the John A. Kufuor Foundation’s partnership with MountCrest University College and other institutions of higher learning. These are commendable partnerships, and we look forward to more of such sponsorships in Ghana and beyond for scholars and alumni.
I want to conclude by saying that it is a great privilege to be part of this wonderful family with former President J. A. Kufuor as our grandpa, the amazing team at the foundation as our guardians, and all scholars and alumni as my brothers and sisters. As an alumni community, we look forward to more of such opportunities to call upon, share our aspirations and ideas with you, and get the necessary support for our ambitions.
Someday soon we would definitely come back to show our appreciation massively. Apart from the former president, we will want to say a big thank you to the CEO and staff of the John A. Kufuor Foundation for all the support. You have been instrumental in guiding and assisting us whenever we call upon you, and we are grateful.
