What We Stand for

What We Stand for

The John A. Kufuor Foundation envisions the establishment of peaceful, well-governed and economically sustainable societies in Ghana and Africa, and recognizes the inter-linkages of leadership, governance and development. It affirms leadership as a critical element and a prime determinant of a nation’s development. Hence, the Foundation seeks to promote effective leadership as the catalyst for good governance, and socioeconomic development through advocacy, programmatic interventions and strategic partnerships with like-minded organizations and institutions.

To advance the mission, a number of initiatives have been developed in three focus areas: (i) Leadership; (ii) Governance; and (iii) Sustainable Development.

Leadership

The Kufuor Scholars’ Program provides a specialized three-year transformational leadership preparation for the Ghanaian/African youth. The Foundation targets young people in universities and add value to formal education by offering specialized orientation through programmed mentorship and coaching, skills training and experiential activities and stipends. The program is expected to produce leaders who are imbued with a strong sense of patriotism and integrity, and are innovative and creative thinkers. Other leadership programs will soon be introduced.

Governance

The Foundation advocates good democratic governance and has instituted the Annual Governance Lecture to inform the public on critical issues of governance in Africa’s development. The Global Development Lecture Series also provides a forum for global thought leaders to share their views on contemporary and future events of governance and development of global significance. The Foundation also supports President Kufuor’s engagements and advocacy to promote democratic governance and interventions for peaceful electoral conduct in Africa.

Sustainable Development

Through partnerships, the Foundation has introduced activities to enhance the socio-economic wellbeing of rural communities. It provides potable water to rural communities through solar-assisted mechanized boreholes. It is engaged in a 5-year project that empowers small-scale rice farmers in Ghana, Nigeria, Burkina Faso and Tanzania.

In Ghana the Foundation advocates for the preservation of biodiversity and is assisting the development of “national biodiversity guidelines” through stakeholder consultative processes. For sustainable development in Africa, the Foundation is initiating the establishment of the Africa Climate Leadership Center to build the capacity of the public and private sectors to apply the best and latest thinking on climate-compatible development.
